FDA Fast-Tracks Psilocybin Depression Treatments With Priority Vouchers

By Psilocybin News Editorial TeamOctober 28, 2026Research1 min read

The US Food and Drug Administration has thrown its weight behind psychedelic medicine, announcing national priority vouchers for three programs: psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, psilocybin for major depressive disorder, and methylone for PTSD.

The move follows an April 2026 executive order directing the government to accelerate treatments for serious mental illness. Priority vouchers slash the FDA's review clock from the standard ten months to as little as one to two — a benefit companies usually earn or buy, now granted by the agency itself.

Why it matters

Regulators rarely signal enthusiasm this openly for a drug class that remains Schedule I. Combined with the FDA's finalized guidance on psychedelic clinical trials — which spells out exactly what evidence the agency expects — the message to developers is unmistakable: the path to approval is mapped, and the agency is waiting at the end of it.

Industry watchers quoted in Nature now describe psilocybin approval as looking "inevitable," with several companies resubmitting or advancing new-drug applications.

What happens next

The voucher does not approve anything — the drugs must still clear Phase 3 trials. But with the Usona Institute's uAspire Phase 3 study in major depression fully enrolled and completion targeted for early 2027, the first approval decision could arrive sooner than most expected.
